Capture three usable cough samples from each participant.

Design Response

First-time participants may be unsure how to position the phone, when to cough, or whether they recorded correctly. I used visual guidance, step-by-step progress, and playback before saving so participants could follow the recording process and review each sample before moving on.

Design Response

Breathing recordings require participants to maintain the right position and breathing pattern for 30 seconds. I used visual guidance and a timed recording flow to show exactly how to position the phone, how to breathe, and when the recording was complete.

Collect relevant demographic and health data to provide context for each participant’s audio samples.

Design Response

Based on the study requirements, I identified and organized the demographic and health variables needed for analysis, then grouped them into Basic Information and Current Health to make a complex questionnaire easier to navigate.

After sharing personal health data, participants need clarity on what happens next. I provided a unique participation ID, submission confirmation, and a brief explanation of how their data would be used for research.

Final thoughts

This project taught me to design beyond the interface by considering how participants behave while meeting the needs of the research.

Every decision, from recording guidance to questionnaire structure, was shaped by one question: How can we make participation easier without compromising the data researchers need?
